the goodlife standard

The GoodLife Standard was initially created to help guide our response to the COVID-19 pandemic but has since evolved to guide all aspects of our operations to help ensure a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone in our Clubs.

The Standard is made up of four pillars:

  • Health and Safety
  • Cleanliness
  • Service and Experience
  • Respect, Caring and Belonging

 Overview

Although most public health restrictions have been lifted across Canada, the last two years have taught us to be adaptable to an ever-changing reality. Our dedicated team monitors best practices and public health guidance to ensure that our approach is informed, comprehensive, and consistent. While the policies and procedures outlined in the Standard may have changed, our commitment to caring, cleanliness, safety, and service is here to stay.

If public health measures change, we will update our website as quickly as possible and communicate directly with Members where necessary. Click on the tabs below to learn more about the pillars of The GoodLife Standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

From the outset of the pandemic, GoodLife has embarked on an unprecedented effort to ensure our Clubs are as safe as possible for all our Members and Associates. We have consulted a variety of experts in infection prevention and control to establish a set of comprehensive guidelines that help create the safest environment possible in all of our Clubs. We continue to work with government and public health stakeholders to ensure each of our Clubs are meeting or exceeding all guidelines put forth by all levels of government.

As public health guidance and provincial orders evolve, we will continue to regularly update our health and safety standards.

We are grateful for the ongoing efforts of our Members and Associates to keep one another - and their greater communities - safe and healthy during these unique times.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have closely monitored all public health guidelines and adapted our health and safety practices to ensure we are meeting or exceeding those measures. Our current operational practices differ from province to province based on the latest local public health guidelines. As those guidelines continue to evolve, GoodLife will continue to make changes according to the regulations and recommendations of government and public health officials. We are optimistic that these measures will continue to ease into the future.

We are not reducing Membership fees, but we will not be charging for amenity add-ons that are not currently available. All current limitations to our amenities and services are required to ensure we are complying with government regulations and/or providing a Club environment that is as safe as possible.

In order to add value for our Members while some options are unavailable, we have been working hard behind the scenes to provide hundreds of online options to support you as you work on your health and fitness goals from outside our Clubs. This includes hundreds of on-demand workouts on our Member portal and 15+ live, online workout and mental wellness classes every week, as well as daily workouts and content on our social media channels.

We know that everyone's personal situation is different and encourage Members to visit the recently-updated Member Portal to learn about the options available to them.

People join GoodLife because they want to be and feel healthy, happy and strong – physically and mentally. In pursuit of the good life, they often find a sense of community that keeps them coming back and a convenience that is second to none in Canada.

Even with our robust investments in safety, we recognize that these are unique and challenging times and that everyone’s personal situations are different.

We highly recommend trying out this new Club experience. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised! But if you’re just not ready yet, that’s ok too.

To see the options available based on your Membership type, visit our Member Portal.

GoodLife is proud to offer a variety of signature services and amenities to our Members, and our goal is to reintroduce all of these options as soon as is possible. However, in order to keep our Clubs open and operating safely, we will continue to rely on the public health guidelines of each region to determine which amenities are safe to operate at any given time. To see what is currently available at your Club, please Find Your Club.

If a province has a vaccine mandate in place, Members must provide proof of full vaccination, or other valid documentation, to enter a GoodLife Club in that province.

For more information on the protocol and requirements at your local Clubs, please visit the 'Proof of Vaccination' tab on our GoodLife Standard Page.

Responding to the varied masking mandates and restrictions in Public Health regions across the country, GoodLife introduced a colour-coded masking system for Members. GoodLife’s mask level system has three colour-coded levels, ranging from Green to Red. At level Green, masking is a personal choice; at level Yellow, masks can only be removed at your individual workout station; and at level Red, masks must be worn at all times, in all areas of the Club.

Our goal by implementing this system is to clarify mask usage standards for Members at each Club. Please note that your Club’s masking level may change at any given time as per regional Public Health guidelines and/or GoodLife decisions. To find the individual requirements for your Club, please refer to the chart under Club & Mask Status.

Members are encouraged to bring a pre-filled water bottle for their workout. Water fountains will be equipped with bottle fillers, but Members are not permitted to drink directly from the water fountains.

Foam rollers, bands, and mats are available to Members at this time. These items must be cleaned before and after each use. Members are encouraged to bring their own small equipment, where possible, to decrease the number of items being handled in the Club.

Hairdryers and curling irons are available at select locations.

We have taken steps to limit the number of Associates behind the front desk at one time. We ask for your patience as our Associates try to assist with any questions as promptly and safely as they can. Please wait in the designated waiting areas until an Associate is available to speak with you.

Note: Please ensure your email is up to date to receive important updates about your Club.

Frequently Asked Questions - Club and Mask Status

We have returned to our usual Member freeze policy. We have expanded our self-serve portal to empower Members to manage the options available to them.

Please Note: If you are in a region where Clubs are closed due to government restrictions, automatic freezes will continue until Clubs in your region reopen.

All of our Clubs are operating with open workouts and booking is not required for the General Workout Floor. For Group Fitness classes, we continue to require advance booking through the GoodLife App and Member Site. Booking for Group Fitness classes is available up to 72 hours in advance of the class start time.

Members who do not show up for their class booking more than twice in a two-week period will be unable to book for 7 days. Our required notice time for cancelling a booking has been set at 5 hours to help Members on the waitlist take advantage of an opening.

Using the GoodLife App or Member Portal, you will see available or waitlisted classes in the schedule. If you select a class that is full, you will be added to the waitlist and will be shown your position in the queue.

When you are moved from waitlist to booked, you will receive a confirmation email or mobile notification if you have them enabled. You can also view your position on the waitlist by visiting ‘My Booked Workouts’ in the GoodLife App or Member Site.

Mask Status

Select a province below to view the current status of a club near you.

For frequently asked questions surrounding these changes click here.

When a club is at level green, masking is a personal choice.
When a club is at level yellow, masks must be worn upon entry, exit, in change rooms and moving between workout stations. Masks can be removed at your workout station and must be worn when you leave your workout station.
When a club is at level red, masks must be worn at all times, in all areas of the club. Please reduce your intensity level accordingly.*

* Where Clubs are at Level Red, individual accommodations may be considered for those who are unable to wear a mask due to a disability recognized by the Human Rights code. These evidence-based** accommodations will be dealt with on an individual basis.

** Reasonable documentation to support an accommodation request will be required.

Health and Safety

Our primary focus is the health and safety of our Associates, Members, and the communities we serve. We are committed to ensuring that you have a safe place to comfortably and confidently pursue your fitness goals. Our Occupational Health and Safety, Club Inspection and Critical Response Programs ensure we deliver the highest standards of health and safety across all of our spaces and places.

What this means in our Clubs:

  • We put your health and safety first when making policy decisions;
  • Equipment and facilities are checked regularly, and repairs or replacements are made as quickly as possible;
  • All of our Clubs are equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for use in emergency situations, and CPR-A + AED training is required for Associates;
  • Associates are required to self-assess for the absence of illness prior to entering the workplace.

How you can do your part:

  • Take the personal health and safety measures that help you feel comfortable in our Clubs;
  • Stay home if you are feeling unwell;
  • Wipe down equipment before and after each use;
  • Report any issues with equipment to our Associates;
  • Respect the privacy and safety of others by following the Photo, Video and Mobile Device policy;
  • To avoid tripping hazards, keep your bags in a locker and off the workout or studio floors;
  • Use a spotter when working out with free weights; especially heavy weights.

Cleanliness

We are committed to providing you with a clean facility to enjoy. All GoodLife Clubs operate with a focus on consistent cleaning; Associates disinfect equipment and high-touch areas frequently throughout the day. GoodLife has invested in industry-leading cleaning products, thorough training, and diligent monitoring to ensure all equipment and areas of the Club meet our high standards for cleanliness.

What this means in our Clubs:

  • You'll enjoy a clean, sanitary facility so you can focus on what matters most - your workout and time spent with your fitness community.

How you can do your part:

  • Wipe down equipment before and after each use;
  • Wear appropriate exercise clothing and footwear - during the Winter season, we ask that you remove all outdoor footwear when you enter the Club;
  • Return all weight and equipment to their proper place when you've finished using them.

Service and Experience

Every Member matters at GoodLife, and we are committed to meeting you wherever you are at in your fitness journey. As we strive to create the best combined live and digital fitness experience, GoodLife Members have access to flexible options like Remote Personal Training and an ever-growing library of digital fitness content through the GoodLife Fitness app. As we develop new ways for you to access fitness wherever you are, we continue to provide a positive and consistent in-Club experience with a wide range of services, amenities, and equipment.

What this means for our Members:

  • Our knowledgeable and welcoming team of Associates will ensure that you have the best possible experience in our Clubs;
  • Our Home Office team will continue to seek out new services and equipment that help you get the most out of your workouts;
  • There are always options for achieving your health and fitness goals in-Club or from the comfort of your home;
  • If you have any trouble navigating our online options, our Associates will be happy to assist you.

How you can do your part:

  • Download the GoodLife Fitness app and mix up your in-Club routine with one of our guided workouts, or supplement your in-person workouts with exceptional at-home content;
  • If you have any questions - about our offerings, your Membership or where to get started - ask one of our Associates;
  • Stay up-to-date on our latest offerings by joining our GoodLife Fitness email list.

Respect, Caring, and Belonging

At GoodLife, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive space for all, and an environment where everyone feels safe and welcome.

We expect everyone who engages with GoodLife Fitness, in any of our spaces - live or digital - to behave in a caring and respectful manner. Any form of bullying, discrimination, harassment, intimidation, illegal behaviours or interactions, violence, or any behaviour that creates an unsafe or hostile environment, is not tolerated.

What this means in our Clubs:

  • GoodLife is a no-judgment and safe environment - we are committed to providing a comfortable, supportive, and welcoming environment for everyone;
  • Our Associates are guided by our commitment to demonstrate caring in all situations;
  • Members exhibiting harmful or illegal behaviour in our Clubs will be subject to disciplinary action, including up to a lifetime ban from all GoodLife locations;
  • Members exhibiting harmful behaviour on our social media channels may have their comments deleted, be blocked from engaging with our channels and may be subject to the same disciplinary action as someone in our physical locations.

How you can do your part:

  • Follow all GoodLife policies, and ensure you are not taking part in illegal or harmful behaviours;
  • Be polite and courteous in all interactions with others - differences of opinions are permitted; however, respect is mandatory;
  • Observe and be respectful of the personal space and experience of others;
  • Be mindful of Club hours and ensure you have enough time to leave the Club at or before the closing time;
  • If you see another Member exhibiting harmful, illegal, or disrespectful behaviour, please notify a GoodLife Associate.

Proof of Vaccination

We practice and expect kindness.

These are challenging times with no perfect solutions. The government-mandated vaccine verification rules are not created by GoodLife and are expected to be followed by all fitness facilities, not just our Clubs.

GoodLife is following this government public health order in the same way we follow any rules that are mandated for gyms (i.e., fire codes, access to potable water etc.).

While we respect some may hold different views on these government regulations, harassment towards anyone in our Clubs solves nothing, serves no one, and will not be tolerated.

If individuals cannot or do not wish to comply with these rules at this time, we respect that. However, because these rules apply to everyone working out in our Clubs, the consequence of non-compliance is not being able to work out in our Clubs while these rules are in place.

We know the vast majority of people in our Clubs are doing their best to practice kindness and we thank you for doing your part to keep our Clubs safe and open.

We have all been through a lot over the course of the pandemic. Let’s not forget that as we practice kindness toward each other. If we continue to work together, we can get through this.

As of March 15, 2022, British Columbia currently requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination to work out in a fitness Club.

As we have throughout the pandemic, GoodLife will continue to follow all public health guidelines related to COVID-19, including proof of vaccination regulations.

To date, Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan have removed proof of vaccination requirements for businesses and we have updated our policies to reflect those changes. GoodLife Members are no longer required to present proof of vaccination to access our Clubs in these provinces.

Please ensure you read information about the province your Club is located in.

Membership FAQs:

Q: I wish to make changes to my Membership. What is the easiest way to do that and what are my options?

Members have two efficient options to make changes to their Membership.

Option 1: Use the Member Portal to make changes to your Membership. Once logged in, go to My Account > Profile > *scroll down* > Manage Subscription.

Option 2: Call your local Club. GoodLife Associates are able and ready to help make changes to your Membership.

The freeze option available to you through the portal or by calling the Club is based on your Membership type. In order to be fair to all Members, each person will continue to use the contractual freeze options available for their specific Membership type. Ultimate Members have access to no-fee freezes while other Membership types may be required to pay a small fee to freeze.

British Columbia

British Columbia’s COVID-19 vaccine Public Health Order is for patrons of non-essential businesses, which includes fitness facilities. In order to be granted access, patrons of non-essential businesses are required to be fully vaccinated as of October 24.

Member Check-In Process:

When a Member arrives at the Club, Associates must ensure three pieces of information are provided:

  1. The Member's BC COVID-19 Immunization Report Card (physical copy or mobile phone).
  2. Government-issued ID to confirm Member's identity, matching that on their Immunization Record.
  3. GoodLife Member key tag for entry into the Club once vaccination status has been confirmed.

Once the Member's identification and vaccination record have been confirmed, the Member will check-in to the Club using their key tag as normal. Alternatively, Members have the option to sign up to add Fast Pass to their record, which will allow them to access the Club without having to show their vaccination documentation on each visit. For more information, please see the Fast Pass section below.

For more information, please visit the BC government website.

Fast Pass

Fast Pass is a convenient option that will allow our Members to access our Clubs without having to show their vaccination documentation on each visit.

No copies or records of vaccination status will be kept, only a record of eligibility to access our Clubs based on provincial rules.

To participate, Members must sign a consent form to agree to allow GoodLife to store this information, which will only be used for the purpose of verifying access eligibility.

How it works:

To sign up for the optional Fast Pass, Members will go through the following process:

  1. Ask a GoodLife Associate about adding Fast Pass to your account;
  2. Present the documentation required in your province;
  3. Review and sign the required consent document. Proof of vaccination - physical copy or photograph of an immunization record from a regional health authority clinic, pharmacy, or Public Health.

Once the Fast Pass is added to your record, you will be able to access our Clubs as you normally would, by simply scanning your GoodLife Key Tag.

Please Note: This information will only be used for the purpose of determining entry more efficiently on future check-ins. If you do not wish to sign up for Fast Pass, you may continue to show the documentation required in your province at each check-in.

If you sign up for Fast Pass and change your mind, please contact your Club and we will remove Fast Pass from your record. You will then need to show your documentation at each check-in.
